Other Common and Commercial Names: Negrito coyote (México), Barbas, Rajate bin (Guatemala, Honduras), Cuajado (Panamá), Aceituno (Colombia, Venezuela), Perchiche (Ecuador), Tahuari (Perú), Taruma cheiroso (Brasil)

Appearance: The outer layers (Albura) are pale yellowish and the inner layers (heartwood) are yellowish brown, with little contrast between both layers. It has dark streaks.

Feature: High luster. Straight grain to criss-cross. Medium texture. It is reported as durable, but very difficult to treat.

Weight: Basic specific gravity (total weight / green volume) ranges from 0.52 to 0.60; air-dry density from 40 to 46 pcf.

Work properties: Wood is difficult to work because of the high silica content and because it tends to crack, however, it offers smooth and highly polished finishes. The drying is moderately easy and does not present appreciable defects in the process. There is no information available about artificial drying programs.

Uses: Wood is used for general and internal construction, railway sleepers, floors, carpentry, furniture, veneers and plywood and tool handle.
